How to Relocate Missing Tracks in Traktor (Fix the Exclamation Mark)

   Find out how many tracks are missing

   Right-click Track Collection in the browser tree and choose Check Consistency. The Consistency Check Report lists total tracks, tracks missing and tracks not analysed, with Relocate, Remove Missing and Analyze buttons. If Preferences → File Management → "Show Consistency Check Report on Startup" is on you see the same report when Traktor launches. A handful of missing tracks means a moved album; hundreds means a moved or renamed drive.

   Work out where the files went

   Missing tracks show a red exclamation mark in the status column. Right-click one → Show in Finder (Show in Explorer on Windows) fails, so instead check the path Traktor still has: hover the icon or look at the file path in the browser's Location column. Compare it with where the file really is now: a renamed music folder, an external drive that mounted under a new volume name or drive letter, or a Music folder that iCloud Drive or OneDrive moved into its own tree.

   Relocate the selection

   Select the missing tracks (a playlist or the whole Track Collection sorted by the status icon), right-click → Relocate, and in the file dialog choose the folder that now holds them, as high up as you can, such as the root of the drive. Traktor scans that folder and all subfolders for files with the same names and fixes each LOCATION. It reports how many were relocated at the end; anything left is either renamed or really gone.

   Relocate everything from the Consistency Check Report

   For a moved drive it is faster to press Relocate inside the Consistency Check Report, which relocates every missing track in one pass with one folder pick. Run Check Consistency again afterwards; a Missing count of zero means the collection is whole. Use Remove Missing only for tracks you deliberately deleted, because it removes the entry with its cues.

   Fix the Music Folders so it does not recur

   Open Preferences → File Management and update Music Folders to the new location, removing the old entry. If "Import Music Folders at Startup" is on, an outdated entry keeps trying to re-import the old path, and a new entry for the moved folder would import the same tracks a second time as cue-less duplicates. Relocate first, then change the folder list.

   Save and back up collection.nml

   Traktor writes collection.nml on exit, so quit cleanly rather than force-quitting to keep the repaired paths. Why Traktor loses tracks and what survives a relocate

collection.nml identifies each track by its absolute path: the LOCATION element stores the volume name, the directory (written with /: separators) and the file name. Move, rename or re-mount anything in that chain and the entry no longer resolves, so Traktor shows the exclamation mark. On Windows the classic cause is an external drive that came back as E: instead of D:; on macOS it is a renamed volume, a music folder dragged into iCloud Drive, or a Music folder that macOS relocated during a migration.

Everything else in the entry stays put. Cues and loops (CUE_V2), the Grid marker and Pro 4 flexible beatgrid, BPM, key, rating, comment, play count and the playlist references keyed to the same path are all in collection.nml, not in the file. Relocate only rewrites LOCATION, so all of it survives. Traktor's own analysis caches in the Stripes and Transients folders are keyed to the track as well; if a relocated track shows a blank waveform, load it once and Traktor rebuilds the stripe.

Relocate versus Import Music Folders

Relocate updates existing entries. Import Music Folders (right-click Track Collection, or the folder list under Preferences → File Management) adds files it finds as new entries. If you import the moved folder while the old entries are still marked missing, Traktor now has two entries per track: the old one with your cues and a dead path, and a new one with a live path and nothing else. Playlists keep pointing at the old, broken entry. Untangling that means deleting the new ones and relocating the old ones anyway, so always relocate first.

Relocate matches by file name, so a track you renamed on disk will not be found. For those, load the new file into Traktor, then either recreate the cues or use a cue converter that matches on audio rather than path.

Moving to a new computer without a relocate marathon

If the whole library is moving machines, keep the volume name and folder structure identical (an external drive with the same name, or the same user name and Music folder on the new Mac or PC) and collection.nml opens with zero missing tracks. Frequently asked questions

Why does Traktor show "Track not found" with a red exclamation mark?

The file is no longer at the path stored in collection.nml. The track was moved, renamed, or is on a drive that is unplugged or mounted under a different name or letter. Relocate fixes the path; reconnecting the drive under its old name also fixes it.

Does Relocate keep my cue points and beatgrid?

Yes. Relocate only rewrites the LOCATION of the entry; the CUE_V2 cues, loops, grid markers, key, rating and playlist membership stay attached.

Can I relocate many tracks at once?

Yes. Select any number of tracks and right-click → Relocate, or press Relocate in the Consistency Check Report (right-click Track Collection → Check Consistency) to handle every missing track with one folder pick.

Where is the Consistency Check in Traktor Pro 4?

Right-click Track Collection at the top of the browser tree and choose Check Consistency. The report can also open automatically at launch via Preferences → File Management.

I changed my external drive's letter on Windows. Do I have to relocate everything?

Either give the drive its old letter back in Disk Management, which fixes every path instantly, or run Relocate from the Consistency Check Report pointed at the drive's root.

What does Remove Missing do?

It deletes every entry Traktor cannot find, together with its cues and playlist references. Use it only after relocating, for tracks that are really gone.
