How to Fix Messy DJ Library Metadata (Artist, Title, BPM, Key, Genre)

Short answer

Back up the library, then run a bulk metadata tool that matches each file against a music database and proposes artist, title, album, album artist, label, release date, genre, BPM and key, and review the before/after table before it writes anything. Fill empty tags first and overwrite only fields you trust the database on (label, release date); leave your own BPM and key analysis alone unless it is clearly wrong.     Back up the music folder and the DJ database

    Tag writes change the audio files themselves, and Rekordbox, Serato and Traktor each keep their own copy of some fields. Copy the music folder, and export the DJ library (Rekordbox XML, Serato _Serato_ folder, Traktor collection.nml) before you start. MixGoat backs up each file automatically before writing, but a full copy is still the right first step.

    Analyze, do not write yet

    Run the metadata tool in analysis mode over the whole library. In MixGoat: Fix Metadata → drop the folder or playlist, tick the fields you want (Artist, Title, Album, Album Artist, Label, Release Date, Genre, BPM, Key). Each track gets a proposed match from MixGoat's music database with the current and proposed value for every field side by side.

    Choose a fill strategy

    Use "Only fill empty fields" for the first pass: it only touches fields that are blank, so nothing you curated by hand is lost. MixGoat's other two modes are "Overwrite text, keep keys" (replaces artist, title, label and the like but leaves your BPM and key analysis alone) and "Overwrite everything" for a library you do not trust at all.

    Review and approve per track

    Scan the before/after table for mismatches: remixes matched to the original, VIP or edit versions matched to the release, compilations changing the album field. Uncheck anything you do not want. This step is what separates a clean library from a differently messy one.

    Write, then re-import in your DJ software

    Write the approved tags. MixGoat writes into the audio files only (ID3 for MP3 and WAV, the native tag formats for FLAC, AIFF and M4A) and can keep a .bak copy of each file first. Then in Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor or VirtualDJ, reload tags for the affected tracks (Rekordbox: Reload Tag; Serato: re-scan ID3 tags; Traktor: Import Music Folders / Check Consistency) so the app's database picks up the new values instead of showing its cached ones.

    Rename files to match (optional)

    Once tags are right, rename files to a consistent "Artist - Title" pattern so the folder is readable outside the DJ software too. MixGoat's Rename Files step does this with two options, Prettify (capitalise, strip leading track numbers) and Use Database Names, and it adds (1) rather than overwriting when two files would collide. Rename through a tool your DJ app can relocate from, or re-link the tracks afterwards.

Which fields to trust from a database, and which to keep

Artist, title, album, album artist, label, release date and genre are facts about the release and are safe to take from a database once the match is right. BPM and key are analysis results; your DJ software's analysis of the actual file is usually better than a database value that may come from a different master or edit. Take BPM and key from the database only to fill blanks, and re-analyze in the DJ software afterwards.

The mistakes bulk tools make

Wrong version: an extended mix matched to the radio edit, or a remix matched to the original. Check the duration against the match. Compilation albums: the album field gets replaced by a compilation title, which is technically correct but rarely what a DJ wants. Genre taxonomies: databases use broad genres (House) where DJs want styles (Tech House); check the proposed genre against the sub-genre you actually file the track under before approving it.

Tag formats and DJ software

MP3 uses ID3v2, AIFF uses ID3 inside the file, FLAC uses Vorbis comments, M4A uses iTunes-style atoms and WAV uses INFO or ID3 chunks. Not every DJ app reads every chunk in every format: MixGoat writes both RIFF INFO and ID3v2 into WAV for that reason, and Traktor shows its own cached values until you reload. Writing the native format for each file and then reloading tags in the DJ app is the reliable path.

Frequently asked questions

Will fixing metadata break my cue points or playlists?
No, as long as the files are not moved or renamed. Cue points and playlists are keyed to the file path in Rekordbox, Serato and Traktor. Tag fields can change freely; if you also rename files, do it through a tool that updates the DJ database, or re-link the tracks afterwards.
Can I fix metadata for free?
MixGoat analyzes every track and shows every proposed fix for free; writing the tags is part of the GOAT plan. Manual editing is free in every DJ app but does not scale past a few hundred tracks.
Should I let the tool overwrite BPM and key?
Only to fill blanks. Your DJ software's analysis of the actual file is the better source for BPM and key, and Rekordbox, Serato and Traktor will re-analyze anyway.
Does this work for WAV files?
Yes. WAV files carry tags in an ID3 or INFO chunk; MixGoat writes both, and Rekordbox and Serato read them. If a WAV also fails to load on a CDJ with error E-8305, that is a header format issue, fixed separately by the Fix Compatibility tool.
